India Post GDS Online Form 2026 Schedule II

Published: 2026-08-27T00:00:00.000Z · Updated: 2026-08-27T20:36:18.306Z

The India Post GDS Online Form 2026 Schedule II notification has been issued by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, for engagement of Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak posts across different postal circles and divisions. The recruitment is being conducted under Notification No. 17-12/2026-GDS, Schedule-II, July 2026.

Latest Update: One-Time Registration will open on 31 August 2026 and close on 19 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. The actual online application and fee-payment window will run from 2 September to 21 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. A two-day edit/correction window is scheduled for 23–24 September 2026.

This recruitment is especially important for Class 10 candidates because there is no written examination or interview. Shortlisting is done through a system-generated merit list based on Class 10 marks, subject to eligibility, local-language requirements and document verification.

Vacancy-count clarification: Several news reports are describing the drive as having more than 25,000 vacancies. However, the official descriptive notification itself does not print one consolidated nationwide total; it states that tentative vacancies are provided circle/division-wise. Candidates should use the official GDS portal for the final division-wise vacancy position instead of relying on an unofficial national total.

How Many India Post GDS Vacancies Are There?

Current media reports describe Schedule-II as a recruitment drive involving 25,000+ posts nationwide. Candidates should nevertheless understand how the Department itself presents the vacancy data.

The official descriptive notification says that the vacant posts are tentative and published Circle/Division-wise. The Annexure-I structure includes the Division, Office, Post ID, TRCA, Account Office, local language, PIN code and community category for each notified post.

For that reason, the most reliable answer for an individual candidate is not a rounded national number but the official vacancy list of the Division in which he or she intends to apply.

Best practice: When registration opens, check the official portal and note the exact Division, Post ID, category, local language and post preference before paying the fee.

Educational Qualification – Class 10 Requirement

The essential educational qualification is a Secondary School Examination / Class 10 pass certificate from a recognised Board of School Education.

The candidate must have passing marks in:

  • Mathematics, and

  • English.

The notification specifically refers to recognised boards under the Government of India, State Governments or Union Territories. Candidates with an “equivalent qualification” from another board should not automatically assume eligibility because the official notice states that such equivalence is not accepted for GDS engagement unless it falls within the recognised-board framework.

Local Language Rule Is Just as Important as Class 10

Applicants must have studied the prescribed local language at least up to Class 10 from a recognised board. The required language varies by postal circle and post.

This condition can make a candidate ineligible for a particular Division even when Class 10 marks are high. The application portal displays posts according to information such as community, age, PwBD status and local language.

Do not choose a postal circle only because it has more vacancies. First verify that your Class 10 record satisfies the local-language requirement for that post.

Age Limit and Relaxation

Age will be calculated on the last date of online application submission.

Category

Age / Relaxation

Minimum Age

18 years

Maximum Age

40 years

SC / ST

5 years upper-age relaxation

OBC

3 years upper-age relaxation

EWS

No additional age relaxation

PwBD

10 years

PwBD + OBC

13 years

PwBD + SC / ST

15 years

EWS reservation and age relaxation are separate concepts. An EWS candidate should not add three or five years to the normal upper-age limit unless another applicable rule specifically provides it.

Other Required Qualifications

Besides Class 10 and local-language eligibility, the Department lists three additional requirements:

  • Knowledge of computers

  • Knowledge of cycling

  • Adequate means of livelihood

Selected candidates have to submit undertakings relating to these requirements. The prescribed declaration also treats ability to ride a bicycle and/or drive a two-wheeler scooter/bike as relevant for performing GDS duties.

Important: GDS Is Not a Regular Central Government Employee Post

One of the most useful things to understand before applying is the service status. The official notification clearly says that Gramin Dak Sevaks are not regular employees of the Department/Central Government and their emoluments and service benefits are not at par with regular Central Government employees.

GDSs are holders of civil posts outside the regular civil services of the State and usually work in rural areas. Their service conditions are governed by the Department of Posts GDS rules.

Do not describe GDS as a standard 7th CPC government salary job. Payment is based on Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), and the service structure is different from a regular departmental post.

India Post GDS Salary / TRCA

GDS personnel are paid through Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA). The notification provides the following basic TRCA slabs:

Post

Basic TRCA Slab

Branch Postmaster (BPM)

₹12,000 – ₹29,380

Assistant Branch Postmaster / Dak Sevak

₹10,000 – ₹24,470

TRCA carries an annual increase of 3% subject to the GDS rules. Dearness Allowance is also payable on TRCA as declared by the Government from time to time, along with certain other allowances and social-security benefits under the applicable rules.

Working Hours and Other Source of Income

The notification says GDSs are required to work for a minimum of four hours and a maximum of five hours a day under the relevant rules. It also states that a GDS should have another source of income besides the allowances paid by the Government for adequate means of livelihood for the candidate and family.

This is an unusual condition compared with many conventional government recruitments and should be understood before applying.

BPM Candidates Must Arrange Branch Post Office Accommodation

A candidate selected as Branch Postmaster has an additional responsibility: he or she must arrange suitable accommodation for the Branch Post Office at personal cost after selection and before engagement, according to the prescribed standards.

The selected BPM is also required to reside in the post village. ABPMs and Dak Sevaks have their own residence requirements linked to the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned post office.

What Do BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak Actually Do?

Branch Postmaster (BPM)

The BPM handles day-to-day operations of the Branch Post Office and India Post Payments Bank services. Duties can include customer-service operations, promotion of departmental products, postal work, mail conveyance and delivery responsibilities in a single-handed Branch Office.

Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)

An ABPM may handle stamps and stationery, mail conveyance and doorstep delivery, IPPB deposit/payment transactions, assistance to the BPM and promotional/customer-service responsibilities.

Dak Sevak

Dak Sevaks may work in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices or Delivery Centres. Duties can include handling mail bags and parcels, delivery work, transhipment, support to departmental post offices and business or marketing-related tasks assigned by supervisors.

No Written Exam: How the Merit List Is Prepared

The selection process is based on a system-generated merit list. Class 10 marks are aggregated into a percentage calculated to four decimal places.

If the marksheet contains both marks and grades, the candidate should use the marks according to the prescribed application method. Incorrectly entering grade points where marks are available can create a candidature problem.

Higher qualification does not add selection marks. The merit list is based on the Class 10 result under the notified method. Graduation, diploma or work experience does not automatically increase the GDS merit score.

What Happens If Two Candidates Have the Same Merit?

The notification provides a detailed tie-breaking order. The first priority is date of birth, with the older candidate receiving preference. It then applies a prescribed category/gender priority sequence.

The Department also reserves the right to introduce an additional criterion if needed to resolve a tie. Candidates should therefore not treat a rounded Class 10 percentage alone as a guaranteed selection position.

Application Fee

Applicant

Fee

Non-exempt applicants

₹100 for all posts notified in the chosen Division

All Female Applicants

No Fee

SC / ST

No Fee

PwBD

No Fee

Transwomen Applicants

No Fee

The ₹100 fee covers all posts notified in the selected Division, not ₹100 for each individual preference. Online payment is available through recognised cards, net banking and UPI.

5 PM means 5 PM: The official notice states that payment and application submission must be completed by the exact closing time. Pending payment after 5:00 PM on the final date can lead to rejection.

Registration and Application Are Two Separate Steps

The GDS schedule can be confusing because registration starts before application submission and also closes earlier.

Stage

Schedule

One-Time Registration

31 August – 19 September 2026, up to 5 PM

Application + Fee Payment

2 September – 21 September 2026, up to 5 PM

Edit / Correction

23–24 September 2026, up to 5 PM

A candidate should complete registration first and then submit the actual application during the second window. Waiting until 21 September to begin from scratch can create a serious problem because the registration window itself closes on 19 September.

Only One Registration Is Allowed

The notification strictly prohibits duplicate or multiple registrations. If an error is discovered after submission, the candidate should use the official correction window instead of creating a second registration by changing basic details.

Duplicate registrations can result in cancellation of candidature even if the duplicate is discovered later in the engagement process.

How to Apply for India Post GDS Online Form 2026 Schedule II

  1. Open the official India Post GDS Online Engagement portal.

  2. Complete One-Time Registration between 31 August and 19 September.

  3. Use a personal mobile number and email address that you control.

  4. Enter personal details exactly as shown on the Class 10 marksheet.

  5. After application submission opens on 2 September, log in with the registration details.

  6. Select the Circle/Division permitted by the portal and enter Class 10 board, year and marks information.

  7. Review the list of posts for which you are eligible based on age, category, PwBD status and local language.

  8. Arrange the post preferences carefully.

  9. Upload the prescribed recent photograph and signature.

  10. Pay ₹100 if you are not in an exempt category.

  11. Submit the application and save the confirmation details.

Post Preference Can Change Which Job You Get

A candidate can apply for one or more eligible GDS posts within one selected Division. The portal asks the applicant to rank these posts by preference.

If a candidate becomes meritorious for more than one post, only one engagement will be offered according to the preference logic. Rights to other posts are then forfeited. Therefore, do not rank a remote or unsuitable post above the office you genuinely prefer merely because you think it may have a lower merit threshold.

What Documents Are Uploaded During Application?

The notification says candidates are generally not required to upload all certificates with the application. The main uploads are the recent photograph and signature, while educational, category and other eligibility information is entered in the form and checked later.

Shortlisted candidates must produce original documents during physical verification. These can include:

  • Class 10 / Secondary School certificate and marksheet

  • Local-language proof through Class 10 record

  • SC/ST/OBC/EWS certificate, where applicable

  • PwBD certificate, where applicable

  • Date-of-birth proof

  • Other prescribed undertakings or declarations

The Department may verify Class 10 records electronically through DigiLocker/API Setu or the official educational-board system where available.

What Happens After the Merit List?

The list of shortlisted candidates will be published on the official GDS Online Engagement Portal. Shortlisted applicants may also receive SMS and email information, but the Department advises candidates to keep checking the portal because non-receipt of a message does not create a separate claim.

A shortlisted candidate must report for physical document verification to the designated Divisional/Unit authority within the prescribed period. The notification provides a 15-day period from the date of shortlisting for reporting to the designated authority.

When the shortlist is released, check the NexRojgar Results section for GDS merit-list updates.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting registration after 19 September: Registration closes earlier than the application-submission deadline.

  • Creating duplicate registrations: Use the correction window instead.

  • Entering grade points when marks are available: Follow the exact merit-calculation instructions.

  • Ignoring the local language: Class 10 language eligibility affects which posts are displayed.

  • Choosing post preferences casually: Preference order can determine which single post is offered.

  • Calling TRCA a normal government salary: GDS service conditions differ from regular Central Government employment.

  • Ignoring the BPM accommodation rule: BPM candidates must arrange Branch Post Office accommodation.

  • Waiting for 21 September at night: The official closing time is 5:00 PM.

  • Using blurry photo/signature: The notification warns that illegible uploads can result in rejection.
